SAN JOSE, CA (January 2, 2017) - 12-year old Xavier Meza, who attends Ocala Middle School is San Jose's Alum Rock Union School District, is looking to advance to the National Silver Gloves, with a successful outing at this weekends Silver Gloves Regional Tournament in Southern California.
Meza, ranked #1 in the state of California at 70 lbs., fights out of the Cali Boxing and Fitness gym in East San Jose. A student-athlete, Meza holds a 4.0 grade point average with aspirations of making the USA Olympic team when he turns 18-years old. Xavier earned his position at the Silver Gloves Regionals by winning the California State tournament in December.
Coaches Jessie Sanchez and Jessie Lopez, both feel Meza has the talent to become something special. Sanchez and Lopez started training Meza when he first stepped into the Cali Boxing and Fitness gym in 2013.
"Xavier is one of the hardest working kids I've ever seen." said Cali Boxing and Fitness coach Jessie Sanchez. "He's the first one in and the last one to leave the gym every day. His work ethic is unbelievable. I know there will be a lot of talented kids competing, but I truly believe he's going to do well at this weekend's Regionals."
Parents Heriberto and Veronica Meza, first brought Xavier to the gym when he was 9-years old. They told him if he can keep up his grades, they'll let him box all year round. Xavier excelled in school carried on his boxing objectives.
"Boxing is a great sport and I know I have to maintain good grades to keep my dream of making the USA Olympic team alive when I get older." said Xavier Meza. "Coach Sanchez and Lopez are great role models and I'm very thankful to them for believing in me. My parents are supporting me and I know if I work hard, I can become a champion.
The USA Boxing sanctioned event will take place at the Compton Sherriff Youth Athletic Center (YAL) beginning Friday, Jan. 5, 2017 (3:00 PM) - Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017 (7:00 PM).
