New England Tournament of Champions, 70th annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship - Novice class finals

LOWELL, Mass. (February 19, 2016) - Fourteen 2016 New England Tournament of Champions winners were crowned last night in the novice class of 70th annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.


 

Team Central produced the most individual winners with seven, followed by Team Western with five, and Team Central had two.

 

The unofficial fight of the night was between Salem, MA welterweight Kenny Larson(Team Central) and his Dorchester, MA opponent Jarrod LoMax (Team Southern), in which Larson won a three-round decision, 3-2.

 

Portland, ME bantamweight Christian Morales (Team Northern) continued his performance run in the tournament, winning a three-round decision, 5-0, over hometown Lowell favorite Marquis Fowler (Team Central)   Morales' impressive showings in the tournament will lead him into an open division spot in next week's New Englands.



In a Central N.E. (Greater Lowell) heavyweight final rematch, due to a round-time issue, Methuen's Jesus Flores (Canal Street Boxing) defeated Haverhill's John Roche(Haverhill Downtown Boxing) by the same score as their original match in another thrilling, back-and-forth bout ending a in three-round decision (5-0).  The crosstown rivalry between the two gyms and boxers led up to another compelling match with Flores qualifying for Wednesday night's open class semifinals of the New England Tournament of Champions.

 

The New England Tournament of Champions open class semifinals and finals will be held next Wednesday and Thursday evenings, respectively, at Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

 

The Outstanding New England Boxer in the novice class will be presented to the winner this Wednesday night at the N.E. open semifinals.

Proceeds from the Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship go towards sending the New England Golden Gloves champions to the National Golden Gloves Championship (2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah), in addition to supporting local athletes and area gyms, the Boys & Girls Club, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, cancer funds, scholarships and many other great charitable causes.
